VdlP day 10

 Mérida- Rest Day!

What a day! We woke up at 8:30, had a big breakfast at our hotel then headed out to see the city! 👀  Lots to see in this historic city!  First, we went to the Roman Theater…The theater was first built in 16 BC but due to destruction after a fire in the 1st century AD, it was rebuilt by the command of Hadrian. The theater was mainly used for Greek plays which the Romans loved watching and seated 6000 spectators. Then Roman Amphitheater…It was built in the year 8 BC and had gladiator fights including naval battles as they could fill up the arena with water.  Next, Casa del Mitreo is one of the largest Roman Villas discovered in Europe. It is believed that it must have been an extremely wealthy family living there due to the size and the opulence the remains indicate. We café con leche at the bull ring and met our friends, Paul and Bridget, from the Netherlands for dinner.  We will not see them again 🥲 bc they are taking more rest days than we are 🤷🏻‍♀️  so they will arrive in Santiago after we have already gone 😩
